Producing a movie is a very risky business. Before releasing a film, you can never expect whether it will be a success or a big-time failure at the box office. It is all in the hands of the audience. They can either make a low budget film a big success or declare a huge budget production an absolute flop, and if a movie is enormously loved by the masses, they can even make it a record-breaking sensation around the world. Here is a list of 10 highest grossing Indian films of all time that absolutely killed it at the box office worldwide.  

1. Dangal (2016)


Director: Nitesh Tiwari

Worldwide gross: Rs. 2,024 crore

This Aamir khan starrer biographical sports drama holds the record for the highest grossing Indian film, fifth highest grossing non-english film and the highest grossing sports film of all time. Produced on a budget of Rs. 70 crore, this movie made a box-office collection of Rs. 538 crore in India and Rs. 2,024 worldwide. This film was also a huge sensation in china which contributed to almost half of its total box-office collection.

2. Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017)

Director: S. S. Rajamouli

Worldwide gross: Rs. 1,810 crore

After the huge success of ‘Baahubali: The beginning’ this was one of the most anticipated movies of 2017. So, it came as no surprise when this movie made Rs. 80 crores in Hindi in just two days. It became the first Indian film to gross over Rs. 1000 crore, doing so in just 10 days. This South-Indian periodical drama was made on a budget of Rs. 250 crores and grossed Rs. 1810 crore worldwide.

3. Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015)

Director: Kabir Khan

Worldwide gross: Rs. 970 crore

This Salman Khan starrer comedy-drama received wide acclaim from critics and was a huge commercial success. The duo of an innocent Hanuman devotee and a mute six-year-old Pakistani girl was hugely loved by the masses and almost everyone left the cinema hall with teary eyes. 

4. Secret Superstar (2017)

Director: Advait Chandan

Worldwide gross: Rs. 967 crore

The story of a young girl’s struggle to become one of the biggest singing stars received many positive reviews from critics. It became one of the most profitable films of all time. This film was made under the studio Aamir Khan Productions with a limited budget of just Rs. 15 crore. 

5. PK (2014)

Director: Rajkumar Hirani

Worldwide gross: Rs. 832 crores

Aamir Khan seems to be rocking this list with three of his films being in top 5. Made on a budget of Rs. 80 crore, this movie was one of the biggest hits of 2014. It became the first Indian film to gross more than 700 crore worldwide. At the time of its release, it became the highest grossing Indian film of all time.

6. 2.0 (2018)

Director: S. Shankar

Worldwide gross: Rs. 800 crore

This Rajinikanth starrer tamil language film was released worldwide in both 3D as well as conventional format. It was also dubbed in various languages, including Hindi and Telugu. It earned Rs. 117 crore worldwide on the first day of its release. The film was particularly appreciated for its visual effects and was produced on an estimated budget of Rs. 570 crore. 

7. Baahubali: The Beginning (2015)

Director: S. S. Rajamouli

Worldwide gross: Rs. 650 crores

This historical action-drama was made on a budget of Rs. 180 crore, making it the most expensive Indian film at its time of release. It held the record of being the highest grossing film of India and also the highest grossing South-Indian film for quite some time. It is least to say that people were storming cinema halls to watch this epic drama. 

8. Sultan (2016)

Director: Ali Abbas Zafar

Worldwide gross: Rs. 623 crore

After Bajrangi Bhaijaan, yet another one of Salman Khan’s films has made it into top 10. The movie was made under a budget of Rs. 145 crore and was one of the biggest hits of 2016. This sports-drama had cinema halls fully booked at the time of its release.

9. Sanju (2018)

Director: Rajkumar Hirani

Worldwide gross: Rs. 586 crore

Based on the real life life story of Sanjay Dutt, this biographical film registered the highest opening for any film released in India in 2018, and on its third day, it had the highest single day collection ever for a Hindi film in India.

10. Padmavat (2018)

Director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Worldwide gross: Rs. 585 crore

Despite having some major difficulties in its release, this ancient-drama still managed to earn Rs. 56 crore in just 2 days of its release. Made under a budget of Rs. 200 crore, it absolutely conquered the box office and became a huge commercial success.
