Bollywood actors Alia Bhatt and Hrithik Roshan are among the 819 people invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Art and Sciences. If they accept the invitation, they will acquire voting rights for this year’s Oscar Awards. This year the academy has surpassed its membership goals, with 36% of the intake being people from uderrepresented ethnic/racial communities, 45% women, and 49% international from 68 countries. There are 75 Oscar nominees, including 15 winners, and five recipients of Scientific and Technical Awards.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Academy president David Rubin said, “The academy is delighted to welcome these distinguished fellow travellers in the motion pictures art and sciences. We have always embraced extraordinary talent that reflects the rich variety of our global film community, and never more so than now.”

Besides Hrithik and Alia, documentary filmmakers Nishtha Jain and Amit Madheshiya, designer Neetu Lulla, casting director Nandini Shrikent, visual effects supervisors Vishal Anand and Sandeep Kamal have also recieved invitations from the academy. The list acknowledged Alia Bhatt for her performances in the films Gully Boy (which was India’s official entry for the 2020 Oscars) and Raazi, while Super 30 and Jodha Akbar were listed as Hrithik Roshan’s prominent works.
